The quest to keep the tall-masted and other historic ships at the South Street Seaport Museum appears to be off and running. As the NY Post has reported, the city is in talks to oust the current board but retain the ships and start a revival of the museum. The ships reportedly are in dire shape and badly need an infusion of funds to keep them afloat, quite literally.
Yesterday 84-year-old museum founder Peter Stanford and Robert LaValva who runs the New Amsterdam Market at the seaport both spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of supporters just yards from the historic ships. Guarded optimism was in the air. The crowd sung an old sea shanty with new lyrics calling for the current board’s outster at the end of the rally.
